Infrastructure monitoring experts at Paessler argue that organisations need to develop a good understanding of the infrastructure first in order to monitor their IT environment.
Paessler’s Sascha Neumeier writes that a good understanding of the IT environment is needed to be able to really know how many points of measurement should be monitored.
“Obviously, the more points of measurement you have, the more processing power and planning you will require for your monitoring concept,” Neumeier points out in the company’s enterprise network monitoring blog.
Once points of measurement, thresholds, and alerts have been defined, organisations can segment their network and build a centralised overview, as well as define their response teams and set up the relevant notifications. In total, there are just four key steps to successful IT infrastructure monitoring, Neumeier writes.
“IT is the foundation of your business and monitoring is the insurance for your IT. Especially for large IT environments, monitoring is a vital but complex task,” Neumeier adds.
Optimised, organised monitoring strategies can save time and money while delivering better IT services across the organisation. Factors from device temperature and fan speed to storage remaining, CPU power, and other metrics can all have an effect.
Additionally, it’s typically not feasible to support thousands of polling engines all over a large network, sending data back to one central monitoring server so segmenting the infrastructure is important, perhaps by monitoring network segments separately, depending on the specifics of the environment.
“One way is to segment the monitoring by region,” says Neumeier.
“Another option is to segment the monitoring by functionality. For example, one instance monitors the servers, while another instance monitors applications.”
