Remote connectivity specialist TeamViewer has opened a new centre for research and development in the city of Ioannina, Greece.
The Göppingen, Germany-based firm hopes to diversify its product range and broaden its use cases for a wider variety of customers and geographies.
Mike Eissele, CTO of TeamViewer, revealed a long-term strategy for the new R&D hub.
“Ioannina is a melting pot of engineering graduates and we plan to attract talent from Ioannina, Athens and Thessaloniki,” Eissele said at the inauguration ceremony.
The TeamViewer centre will house new Agile engineering teams focused on developing products that support global mega-trends in digital transformation, including robotics, automation, augmented reality (AR), and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
IT and operational technologies will increasingly need to support each other in smarter environments, offering genuine opportunities for software innovation.
Seventeen engineers already work at the centre. TeamViewer is looking to create a workforce of 150-200 engineers in coming years, with a total of 50 added in 2020.
Nikos Papathanasis, Greece’s deputy minister of investment and development, said Greece was turning over a new leaf and looking to support projects that will not only boost local jobs but attract talent currently working abroad.
