JetBrains unveils AI agent for developers coding with its IDEs

Developer tools vendor JetBrains has launched Junie, an AI agent to assist with coding quality and productivity.

Andrew Zakonov, Junie product leader at JetBrains, wrote that Junie can help software teams execute, further improving the way they work with code.

“With Junie, you can fully delegate routine tasks to your very own personal coding agent or collaborate with it to execute more complex ones,” Zakonov explained.

He said that AI agent Junie would help developers increase productivity. Junie agentic assistance works with JetBrains integrated development environment (IDE) IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate.

Junie can take over various routine tasks. As a result, developers can spend more time on complex jobs.

“Junie already solves tasks that would otherwise require hours of work,” Zakonov wrote.

“According to SWEBench Verified, a curated benchmark of 500 developer tasks, Junie can solve 53.6% of tasks on a single run.”

Such a success rate is “promising”, he added, with better performance predicted over time. It can help review proposed changes fast and maintain project context, for example.

“This shows the potential to adapt Junie to the reality of today’s software development, including large amounts of tasks of different complexity.

“Junie will unlock the power of coding agents for millions of developers,” Zakonov said.

Ultimately Junie could be increasingly integrated into team workflows, enabling teams to redefine tasks for the better.

Of course, AI-generated code can be just as flawed as developer-written code. However, Junie can help improve code via inspections, tests and verification assistance, he said.

“It can adapt to your coding style. Junie can also follow specific coding guidelines.”

Junie was initially available via a JetBrains early-access programme (EAP) for IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate and PyCharm Professional, with WebStorm coming next. Click here to see Junie in action, via YouTube.
