Developer tools company JetBrains has made an AI writing companion generally available with a particular view to the writing needs of dev teams – Grazie.
Oksana Mandryka, writing for JetBrains, said that Grazie can help with proofreading, inline text completion, summarisation, translation, rephrasing and more.
“With Grazie, you can streamline your non-coding tasks by integrating generative AI into your JetBrains integrated development environments (IDEs), browsers, and other tools,” Mandryka wrote.
Grazie can help tech workers generate new ideas, draft documents, or explore perspectives via context-aware AI chat and has multilingual capabilities, she said.
The AI assistant was private and secure for users, without using text that has been typed to train its large language models (LLMs) and without storing typed text in the memory or logs of JetBrains servers, she added.
Grazie Chat can be accessed when on a website to process queries and get responses or suggestions based on input, alongside other “AI powered” features such as Summarize, Translate, Improve, Change tone, and Paraphrase.
The Improve feature can adapt writing inputs for greater elaboration or depth, simplification for better clarity, edit for “more natural” phrasing, abbreviate, and adjust for “readability”.
Change tone can “fine-tune emotional resonance” to match its Professional, Confident, Friendly, Technical and Inclusive specifications, according to JetBrains.
“You can even apply multiple tones in succession to capture just the right voice for your text,” Mandryka wrote.
Translation is currently available for English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.
“Whether you’re working on a code comment, commit message, piece of documentation, or technical blog post, Grazie ensures a professional and polished result. Instant proofreading is currently supported for English, German, Russian, and Ukrainian,” Mandryka added.
Grazie uses large language models (LLMs) proprietary to JetBrains and from third-party providers including OpenAI and Google. The vendor added that it may include more providers if they meet JetBrains’ security standards.
Grazie, which was first rolled out for IntelliJ IDEA in 2019, is available as a plugin for JetBrains IDEs and an extension for Safari, Google Chrome, Arc, and other Chromium-based browsers. Grazie is supported in Google Docs, Google Sheets, Gmail, Confluence, Jira, Bitbucket, GitHub, Slack for the web, Zendesk, YouTrack, and other platforms, according to Mandryka.
It was billed then as an “intelligent” plugin for IntelliJ IDEA for checking English grammar, style, spelling mistakes and typos, with 15 other language models available to add.
