OpenJDK distro Azul adds Gold Stevie to cloud applications award haul

Tech Ascension 2024 solution of the year Azul Platform Prime has taken a Gold Stevie in the cloud/application service category at the 22nd Stevie American Business Awards for biztech innovation.

Scott Sellers, co-founder and chief executive officer at Oracle Java alternative vendor Azul, suggested the recognition reflected that technical and business leaders are looking for solutions that solve two related but seemingly competing, priorities to deliver innovative cloud-based applications yet optimise opex.

“Azul Platform Prime does exactly that by delivering an optimised Java runtime that runs code faster and uses less compute, thus lowering an organisation’s cloud bill,” Sellers said.

Azul Platform Prime is a commercial distribution of OpenJDK billed as targeting cloud infrastructure costs and Java application performance. According to the US based vendor, Stevies voters rated the offering for its performance, consistency and efficiency.

Cloud compute and server costs can be reduced by 20% with Azul Platform Prime, according to Azul, citing Forrester and IDC analysis of the product.

Over-provisioning of cloud instances to ensure organisations can meet application demands has become commonplace, it noted, especially for business-critical workloads and for companies with large fleets of Java-based applications or infrastructure.

The nine-programme Stevie American Business Awards recognise business innovation in many industries and across 70 countries, according to Azul.

March 2024 saw Azul Platform Prime awarded a cloud infrastructure solution of the year gong at the Tech Ascension Awards, which aims to showcase new technologies that can help businesses.

“We understand the struggles enterprises face in managing their cloud costs while also trying to ensure peak performance. Azul Platform Prime was developed precisely to tackle this challenge,” Sellers said at the time.

The idea is to reduce cloud bloat and improve application performance for Java applications and frameworks without changing code, enabling dev teams to focus on other tasks, the vendor added.

In other news, Azul launched Azul Intelligence Cloud with a view to enabling organisations to garner insights from production runtime data across their entire Java estate, and unveiled PartnerConnect programmes aimed at advancing channel partner expertise in Java services and sales.
